1877 is when our story began, and we wanted to celebrate that with a label that would express the character and flavours of the Volcano to the full.
1877 is a vintage sparkling wine from vineyards on the slopes of Etna.
Star of our collection of volcanic bubblies, this wine combines the enticing finesse and power of Nerello Mascalese. Its excellent quality is the result of the love and patient labour of the traditional Classic method.
IN THE VINEYARD
TERRAIN
Vineyards on the slopes of Etna in the Castiglione di Sicilia and Randazzo areas, on sandy soils of volcanic origin, with wide temperature variations from day to night.
TRAINING SYSTEM
Bush and cordon training.
HARVEST
The Nerello Mascalese grapes are picked by hand in mid-September, before they are fully ripe, to preserve their zesty acidity and moderate sugar content.
VINE AGE
Average 15 years.
QUANTITY PER HECTARE
70 quintals (7000 kg) per ha.
IN THE WINERY
Vinification: gentle whole-bunch pressing, for vinification as a white wine. The first fermentation takes place at low temperatures. The second fermentation is in the bottle, in accordance with the Classic method, in the spring following harvest.
Ageing: after the second fermentation, the wine remains on its lees for at least 36 months in our underground ageing cellars, a unique and fascinating place you can see when you visit the winery.
TASTING NOTES
The 1877 Etna DOC Metodo Classico has a bright straw-yellow colour and fine, persistent mousse. Tasting it is like being on the volcano, surrounded by intense scents of white flowers and a delicious bready aroma that anticipates the softness and creamy fizz.
