Koiné Etna DOC Reserve Red is a Gangemi “Family Selection” wine.
Three districts produce the grapes that unite in this wine, combining their riches.
The old vineyards cover high terraces on the north and south slopes of the Volcano, in the best areas of Passopisciaro and Biancavilla. Growing vines in these zones is a heroic activity that gives the wine concentrated flavour and great personality.
IN THE VINEYARD
TERRAIN
Stony volcanic soils, on the north and south slopes of Etna, at 600-1000 m (1970-3300 feet) above sea level. On this terrain the Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio grapes reach full phenolic and sugar ripeness, with low yields.

IN THE WINERY
Vinification: The grapes undergo a long temperature-controlled maceration and fermentation for at least 2 weeks to extract body and aromas.
Ageing: more than 24 months in 25 hl oak and chestnut barrels, followed by a further 24 months in bottle, lying in our underground cellars cut from the basalt rock.
TASTING NOTES
Koinè Etna DOC Reserve Red is a wine for long ageing, maintaining its character for over ten years. A sip is enough to recognise the flavours of ripe red fruits with a pleasant note of vanilla and toasted almond. The minerals of the volcanic soil give it a persistent flavour and elegant tannins.
COLOUR
Intense ruby red tending towards purple, developing light garnet hints with long bottle-ageing.
NOSE
Generous, evolved, with aromas of mixed ripe red fruits, elegant balsamic notes and pleasant hints of toasted almond; end-notes of cocoa, chestnut honey and black pepper.
STRUCTURE
Structured, with elegant tannins. Warm, intense, with great persistence.
AGEING ABILITY
Thanks to the tannin structure and balanced acidity produced by the climate, it can age for over 10 years if well stored lying down in a cool, dry, dark cellar.

ENG Made with 85% Nerello Mascalese and 15% Nerello Cappuccio, this has inviting aromas of mature black-skinned fruit, underbrush, carob and baking spice. Aged in a mix of oak and chestnut barrels, the velvety palate shows dried black cherry, cocoa, cinnamon and orange zest alongside fine-grained tannins. A flinty note lingers on the rather drying finish. Drink through 2024. |

Questo rosso dell’Etna passa 18 mesi in botti di rovere e castagno ed i profumi naturali del legno sono penetrati profondamente in questo vino. ENG The 2010 Etna Rosso Koine is heavily weighed down by oak-related aromas of sandalwood and church incense that mask many of the delicate forest floor and wild berry aromas usually associated with Nerello Mascalese (95%) and Nerello Cappuccio. This Etna red sees 18 months in walnut and oak casks and the natural perfumes of the wood have deeply penetrated this wine. The close is redolent of teriyaki spice and smoky barbecue sauce. Those spice flavors come in stark contrast against the austerity and general astringency of the wine’s dry tannins. Giving it two or three more years of bottle. Drink 2015-2021 |
