MALVASIA DELLE LIPARI DOC

Enjoy a glass of the sweet nectar of the Gods

Malvasia delle Lipari is a natural vino passito (wine made from partially raisined grapes) born of the tradition and winemaking skills on Salina, one of the Aeolian Islands.

The island’s sunshine plays a fundamental role in its production and the wine seems to absorb that heat as well as flavours of broom flowers and honey.

The volcanic landscape where the vines are planted gives the wines a clean freshness that balances its sweet honey-and-vanilla flavour beautifully.

IN THE VINEYARD

TERRAIN

Volcanic soil, 100 m (330 feet) above sea level, on the island of Salina (Aeolian Islands).

The grapes are picked by hand in mid-September.

VINE AGE

5-20 years.

QUANTITY PER HECTARE

70-80 quintals (7000-8000 kg) per hectare.

IN THE WINERY

Vinification: the very healthy grapes are partially dried in the sun immediately after picking, hung on cannizzi, traditional cane trellises. Then they have a brief maceration at low temperatures to maximise extraction of the exotic aromas of the Malvasia grapes. The fermentation is at low temperatures. These highly prized grapes yield only 40% of their original juice!

Ageing: in stainless steel tanks for at least 8 months and then in bottle for at least 1 year.

Pleasing aromas of flowering broom, intense and persistent notes of acacia honey.

STRUCTURE

Sweet, with balanced acidity, fresh.

AT TABLE

FOOD PAIRING

A meal without wine is like a day without sunshine (Anthelme Brillat-Savarin)

Malvasia delle Lipari is a dessert wine that pairs well with Sicilian sweets based on ricotta cheese, but seems born to have the typical almond cantucci biscuits of the Aeolian Islands dipped in it. It is also a great choice to accompany soft herby cheeses.
